HoopTalk – NBA

I love NBA players. The NBA game is high-level stuff. However, the game is evolving in a way that seems to give it a bad rap. 3-point variance. The number one talking point of all media heads nowadays.

The league used to not be so cranky. When the analytic heads took over, it became different. The value of shooting a three-point shot outweighs a two almost every time. There lies the problem: analytics win on one front. But what they do not understand, or take into account, is time and score situations, or making adjustments to defensive coverages.

The formula is threes, layups, and dunks, but what about the mid-range? I love the question, and it should be talked about more. Shot selection tells you everything about the players you have and need to take your shots. Understand that as a coach, you need a catch-and-shoot guy and a pull-up guy. Those two are coveted skills.

The catch and shoot guy can become unguardable if given the right action, flying off staggers, pin downs, aways, even zooms, or DHOs. These players can be lethal. Now, a pull guy is equally as lethal and can become more unguardable when given the proper instruction. Flat ball screens or just double gap drives into elevation pull-ups.
